A message from the Vice Chairman, Maghera Historical Society on the opening of the new Heritage & Cultural Centre.

Let me begin by thanking all of those kind people who were able to attend our opening day event. It is always nice to see faces at any of our events, because that way we know that our efforts are appreciated! I hope that everyone enjoyed the day’s events and the Haunted History tour (for those who attended it). Thank you all for coming. Now, it doesn’t seem like a year has passed since we established the current Maghera Historical Society, does it? Where did all that time go? In that year, Maghera Historical Society has come so far. Further, in fact, than any of us in the Society could have possibly imagined. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our members and my fellow Committee members for all the valuable efforts they have made over this past year in making our Society better and stronger. I’d also like to thank them for their time and for the work they have put into making this Heritage and Cultural centre the beautiful place that you see today. So many people have toiled and sweated to make the Heritage and Cultural a shining beacon that presents our town and presents our local history for the world to see. For those of you who’ve seen it, I think it looks fantastic, don’t you? I’d like to take this opportunity to give thanks to all those who helped out with the logistics of the day, whether through marshalling the events, helping out in the centre or in any other way whatsoever. Your efforts are truly appreciated! I also feel it is fitting that we should give a vote of thanks to our secretary, Mr. James Armour, who has thrown his experience, his time, his vision and his enthusiasm into bringing the concept of this centre to fruition. Hand on heart, I can say that James has proved his worth to the whole society and for that we are all grateful. Finally, I’d just like to say that as a society we are always looking for members (and of course, volunteers to help out with our various works). Membership is an important part of our society, not just in terms of the much needed funds that membership brings in, but also in terms of the skills, knowledge and life experience that new members imbue to the collective society as a whole. So why not join us and help us preserve our town’s history?

Denver Boyd

Vice Chairman, Maghera Historical Society.
