About Us

A Society for those Interested in the History of Maghera

Maghera (pronounced /ˌmɑːhəˈrɑː/ MAH-hə-RAH, from Irish: Machaire Rátha, meaning "plain of the ringfort") is a town in County Londonderry, Northern Ireland. Its population was 2,876 in 1991 and had risen to 3,711 in the 2001 Census. It is a commercial and educational hub for the surrounding villages of Swatragh, Tobermore, Upperlands, Gulladuff and Knockcloghrim.

The Maghera Historical Society was founded in 2011 to allow those interested in the history and people of Maghera and the surrounding area to meet and share information on these subjects.

Our website and Facebook page allow users to upload and discuss files and photographs, and we appreciate any uploads relevant to the town of Maghera.
